Spring News 2020

We are Home Horizon, working to help youth at risk of homelessness, with an intent to transform their lives through housing, counselling and supports. We can't do this alone and it is through our donors, sponsors, and the community of Southern Georgian Bay that we are able to help those that need us most.

You may have noticed that our newsletter is taking on a new, updated look! We hope you enjoy it and continue to keep up to date on the wonderful work we are doing at the Barbara Weider House and throughout the community to help our youth.

A note from Karyn Baker, Our Interim Executive Director
This has been a most challenging and rewarding time. It has been a steep learning curve on how to keep young adults with a variety of needs feeling safe and secure during a pandemic!  These are youth who already feel anxious about their future because of their past.

Our COVID-19 pandemic preventative measures are working: Thanks to the cooperation and patience of our residents, and the commitment and hard work of our staff and board members, we are grateful that our residents are all well and safe. During this time of isolation, the staff are doing their best to nourish them both physically and emotionally.

It has been made easier by the kindness of our community. We have received gifts of meals, treats, games and Personal Protective Equipment! One youth even commented about "how good it felt to know that people are thinking about us." The youth and staff are grateful for the thoughtfulness, it truly makes a difference when you are isolated.

As we move forward, we will continue to be strident about keeping our youth safe especially given that they live in a communal home. We are making plans now to determine how we will gradually and cautiously open our doors when the time comes. Stay tuned.

Help us reach our BOWL GOWL: For the past 10 years, our community has gathered for Bowls for Beds, a warm and fun event that fills both bellies and our hearts! Due to Covid-19, we were not able to come together in person this year, however, we are still together apart, supporting the youth that need us most.

Please help us raise the $24,000 shortfall we would have fundraised at our celebrated event. Your support will help us continue our work in transforming the lives of local youth at risk of homelessness, while also supporting these youth through these unprecedented times. Go to Ways to Help to learn more about this special event or contact Fund Development Manager Deb Piggott for more information: debajpiggott@gmail.com or 705-888-3636.

Psst...  did we mentioned these make excellent Mother’s Day gift?
