Summer News 2020

After a long, difficult few months, Home Horizon is opening up and now able to offer support to our clients with our community partners. We are welcoming back our art therapist, Annhori Clifford.  And thanks to our generous donors, our Barbara Weider House now has outside furniture and a bbq; allowing us more time outside to reduce the likelihood of COVID exposure.

The pandemic has non-profit organizations cancelling fundraising events and scrambling for new ways to raise funds... and we are no different. Our revenue shortfalls has our fundraising committee working hard to find new and creative ways to engage our community and to ignite people’s interest in supporting our youth. If you are able to support us, click the link below. We thank you for your help and support during these difficult times.

Pandemic Pen Pals
Our Barbara Weider House residents have teamed with clients of Home for Life – a program that supports seniors to live in their homes. Both residents and seniors have experienced the pain of social isolation so we have started an old fashioned pen pal program – Pandemic Pen Pals to help bridge the isolation and make connections. Our youth wrote their first set of letters to their senior pandemic pal and are looking forward to hearing back and continuing those relationships.

Culinary Arts with Elephant Thoughts
This month Home Horizon is engaging in a new Culinary experience with the help of Elephant Thoughts. Groceries will be dropped off at the House every Thursday for the next 8 weeks and our youth who have taken their Food Handling course will cook a delicious meal as they are coached by a chef on zoom!

We are looking for Mentors
The youth are busy learning social entrepreneur skills and if you are an entrepreneur and would like to mentor some of our youth, please contact our Executive Director: karyn@homehorizon.ca

Re:cycle - The BWH residents have taken on a new initiative to fix ‘n flip bicycles! These budding entrepreneurs are looking for unwanted bicycles to recycle. If you have a used bike that you can drop off or we can pick up please contact Carlie: carlie@homehorizon.ca.

Your S.A.F.E. Program
Home Horizon with the assistance of the United Way Emergency Community Support Fund is launching the Your SAFE program: Your S.A.F.E.: Specialized Access for Everyone – An Individualized Approach to Youth Homelessness. Funded in part by the Government of Canada's Emergency Community Support Fund, this will allow us to reach out to vulnerable youth, both in person and digitally, as part of a COVID response.

Current & Upcoming Fundraising Initiatives

The Picnic Project - Choose from 3 scrumptious menus, add on a wine pairing, and have your picnic of choice delivered to your door. The Canada Day launch was a huge success and we look forward to keeping up the momentum as the event continues into Fall. The picnics are perfect for date night, an anniversary, wedding present, socially-distanced get togethers or some much needed solo time in nature. Thank you to our generous event partners for putting on this event: Roadrunner Foods, Georgian Hills Vineyard, The Pop-Up Event Event Company, the Print Shop, Georgian Design Centre and Craigleith B&B.

We have gone back to the drawing board for this fun night and brainstorming ideas for a socially-distanced event of the same caliber, all in support of Home Horizon. Details to come so watch your inbox for updates.
