Home Horizon raises $190k, tripling goal in annual Coldest Night of the Year event.
On Saturday, February 20th, hundreds of warm-hearted walkers set out across South Georgian Bay to walk in support of Home Horizon and The Barbara Weider House. In light of the current pandemic, event organizers were cautiously optimistic when planning and kept their goals modest and inline with last year’s goal of $60,000; all while ensuring the message of “youth need our help more than ever” was heard. As the event started gaining momentum and awareness, the team kept checking the numbers in disbelief as it steadily climbed to hit $190,000, a number that is still growing.
“We are so humbled by the generosity that this community has shown.” says Deb Piggott, Fund Development Manager for Home Horizon, “There has been such an outpouring of support. We are filled with gratitude and appreciation.”
The Coldest Night of the Year is a national fundraiser that raises money and awareness for the hungry, homeless and hurting. Traditionally the community gathers and embarks on a 2km/5km walk followed by an Apres-Walk celebration. Limited to a virtual event, teams took to the trails, downtown, neighbourhoods and school tracks to walk in honour of those in need. This year, Collingwood ranked 4th out of 149 communities across the country. While most communities saw an increase in support this year, Collingwood stood out with its spike in support.
"This is more than just funds raised.” said Karyn Baker, Board of Directors Chair “This is a community that has come together to tackle a big problem".
Event chairs Deb Piggott and Alison Smith would like to extend a huge thank you to all who showed up to support this important organization. From lead sponsors BeaverTails and C.F. Crozier & Associates to event sponsors, team captains, walkers, volunteers, and donors, the community has shown the critical importance to helping our vulnerable youth.
